Where to eat in Barcelona's old town: 12 places

· · 8 min read

In the old town it's easy to end up in a tourist café with a menu in six languages. This is a selection from my list of saved places: seafood taverns and tapas bars in El Raval, Sant Pere and El Born, and lunches with a sea view in La Barceloneta. The descriptions are put together from Google Maps reviews, and I'll add my own notes as I visit.

Prices are Google's average spend per person, valid as of 30 September 2026. Rate: 1 € ≈ $1.13.

In short

  • An inexpensive lunch: Fat Cat in El Raval, with a set menu and a chef-owner who comes out to talk you through the dishes.
  • Seafood: Nardi and Mundial Bar in Sant Pere; by the sea, Casa Costa and Camping Mar (lunch only).
  • Old recipes, new take: Dos Pebrots in El Raval. Book for dinner.
  • Tapas at about 4.50 €: La Prudencia del Raval. Ask the waiter to choose for you.
  • World food: Caribbean at Eat Caribbean, Thai and Algerian dishes at Mescladís del Pou, Japanese sandwiches at Sando Cafè Sando.

Dos Pebrots

El Raval · Mediterranean · daily 13:00–15:00 and 19:30–22:30
Google Maps · website · Carrer del Doctor Dou, 19

According to Google Maps reviews (4.4 from 1,700+): a relaxed bistro that reimagines old Mediterranean recipes and tells you where the dishes come from. Reviewers praise the dry-aged cured beef, duck salad, Iberian pork "a la orza", fire-grilled fish, smoked fish, fig doughnuts and duck with pears. Book for dinner. One guest found the tasting menu unbalanced and the service inexperienced.

Eat Caribbean

El Raval · Caribbean · 20–30 € (≈$23–34) · Tue–Sun from 16:00–17:00 until 23:30–0:00, closed Mon
Google Maps · website · Carrer de Montserrat, 4

According to Google Maps reviews (4.8 from 1,850+): a bright Caribbean restaurant where, according to guests from the islands, Caribbean cooks run the kitchen. Reviewers praise the curry goat, jerk chicken, oxtail, plantains and a very strong rum punch; prices are reasonable and the team is warm. One caveat on the rating: guests are sometimes offered a shot for writing a review.

La Prudencia del Raval

El Raval · tapas · 20–30 € (≈$23–34) · Wed–Fri 19:30–1:00, Sat 13:00–16:00 and 20:00–1:00, Sun 13:00–16:00, closed Mon–Tue
Google Maps · Facebook · Carrer de l'Abat Safont, 11

According to Google Maps reviews (4.5 from 490+): a small restaurant serving local tapas at about 4.5 € a plate, with the music kept low. Reviewers praise the tortilla, chicken croquettes, fried wontons, leeks in cream sauce, white asparagus and pulled lamb on brioche. A good move is to let the server choose for you. It can be almost empty, even though guests call dinner here one of the best of their trip.

Fat Cat

El Raval · café-restaurant · 10–20 € (≈$11–23) · Wed–Thu 9:30–0:00, Fri until 1:00, Sat 11:00–1:00, Sun 11:00–17:00, closed Mon–Tue
Google Maps · Plaça de Salvador Seguí, 13

According to Google Maps reviews (4.8 from 590+): an unassuming place with a terrace on a square, where the chef-owner comes out to explain the menu himself. Breakfast, an inexpensive set lunch and creative dishes; the mushroom croquettes and home-made cheesecake get special praise. Friendly service, in English too.

Sant Pere and El Born

Mescladís del Pou

Sant Pere · café & world food · 10–20 € (≈$11–23) · Mon–Thu 11:00–21:00, Fri–Sun 10:00–21:00
Google Maps · website · Carrer dels Carders, 35

According to Google Maps reviews (4.5 from 3,000+): a colourful café full of plants, where the cooking and serving is done by trainees on a culinary programme. The menu has Thai and Algerian dishes, hummus, bravas, fresh juices and very cheap house wine. Downsides: portions are small for the price, the bravas are unusual, and one guest got nachos made from the crumbs at the bottom of the bag.

Mundial Bar

Sant Pere · seafood tapas · 20–30 € (≈$23–34) · Tue–Wed 18:00–23:00, Thu until 0:00, Fri 13:00–1:00, Sat 12:00–1:00, Sun 12:00–0:00, closed Mon
Google Maps · website · Plaça de Sant Agustí Vell, 1

According to Google Maps reviews (4.1 from 980+): an old bar with boxing posters and an atmosphere that, reviewers say, no marketing could fake. Everyone around you is drinking vermouth. Fresh seafood, and it's best to let the staff choose; the shrimp tortilla, croquettes and octopus sandwich get special praise. Service is quick, with hardly a warm-up, and there's usually no queue.

Nardi

Sant Pere · seafood tavern · 20–50 € (≈$23–57) · daily 13:00–0:00
Google Maps · website · Carrer dels Corders, 11

According to Google Maps reviews (4.6 from 460+): a seafood tavern with sharing plates that reviewers rank among the best seafood spots in the city. Try the raw scallop, the prawn dishes and the melon dessert; sitting at the bar lets you watch the team at work, and they give good wine advice. Early in the evening you can get a table without a booking. One guest complains of slow, unfriendly service at around 50 € a head.

Bar Puntal

Sant Pere · seasonal cooking · 20–30 € (≈$23–34) · daily 12:00–0:00
Google Maps · website · Plaça de Sant Cugat, 1

According to Google Maps reviews (4.5 from 1,420+): a bar-restaurant on a quiet square with a big terrace and a menu of local produce that changes regularly. Reviewers praise the black mushroom croquettes (no béchamel), the gazpacho, a tuna melt, the artichokes and the fish, and there are vegetarian dishes. Inexpensive and filling. Book to avoid waiting.

Fismuler

Sant Pere · modern cooking · 30–70 € (≈$34–79) · daily lunch 13:00–16:00 and dinner 19:00–22:30 (Thu–Sat until 23:00–23:30)
Google Maps · website · Carrer del Rec Comtal, 17

According to Google Maps reviews (4.4 from 3,900+): a big, fashionable restaurant with creative food and a good wine list, sometimes with live music. Reviewers suggest sharing everything: baby squid with cheese grated at the table, tuna with beetroot and crème fraîche, Peruvian scallop and cheesecake. Downsides: once the room fills up, guests get forgotten, a tomato-only salad costs 17 €, and some found it all expensive and average.

Sando Cafè Sando

El Born · Japanese sandwiches & matcha · 10–20 € (≈$11–23) · Wed–Sun 10:00–18:00, closed Mon–Tue
Google Maps · website · Carrer del Comerç, 16

According to Google Maps reviews (4.8 from 850+): a small, mostly takeaway café with Japanese sandos that are a full meal rather than a snack. Reviewers praise the katsu sando with very tender pork, the tamago with Dijon mustard, the fruit sandos and the onigiri. Lots of matcha and coffee options: with yuzu, mango or coconut water, and espresso with orange.

La Barceloneta

Casa Costa

La Barceloneta · seafood & tapas · 20–60 € (≈$23–68) · Wed–Sat 12:00–0:00, Sun 12:00–18:00, closed Mon–Tue
Google Maps · website · Carrer del Baluard, 124

According to Google Maps reviews (4.4 from 690+): a long-standing place in a new incarnation, with a terrace and an upstairs room looking out to the beach. Reviewers praise the sea bass, octopus, mussel ceviche, yellowtail, cod salad and chocolate with olive oil and salt. They advise skipping the seafood pasta; the classics come with a modern twist that not everyone likes. Service can be very slow.

Camping Mar

La Barceloneta · paella & seafood · 30–60 € (≈$34–68) · Wed–Sun 13:00–18:00, closed Mon–Tue
Google Maps · website · Marina Vela, Passeig de Joan de Borbó, 103

According to Google Maps reviews (4.3 from 1,010+): an open-air restaurant by the harbour, open for lunch only. Reviewers praise the paellas (the two-person portions are very large), grilled cockles, aubergine hummus, stracciatella salad, bravas and croquettes. Not everyone liked the fish soup shot or the bitter chocolate cake, and the service depends on who you get.

One last thing

A lot is closed on Mondays: Eat Caribbean, La Prudencia del Raval, Fat Cat, Mundial Bar, Sando Cafè Sando, Casa Costa and Camping Mar. On a Monday, go to Dos Pebrots, Nardi, Bar Puntal, Fismuler or Mescladís del Pou, which open every day.
