Best tapas bars in Barcelona: 10 in the old town

· · 7 min read

There are tapas on every corner in Barcelona, but half the places around the Rambla are there for tourists. This is a selection from my list of saved places in the old town, El Born, the Barri Gòtic, El Raval and La Barceloneta: neighbourhood bars, vermouth bars and taverns where locals eat. Tapas bars in other neighbourhoods are in a separate piece. The descriptions are put together from Google Maps reviews, and I'll add my own notes as I visit.

In short

  • One street, three places: Carrer de Montcada in El Born: Bar del Pla, Bodega La Puntual and Tapeo.
  • House vermouth and old Barcelona: Bar Electricitat and Bodega Fermín, across the street from each other in La Barceloneta.
  • Catalan cooking in El Raval: Bar Muy Buenas.
  • Wine and oysters: El Casal Café Bar in El Born.
  • Morning to midnight: Bar Mono and Bar Oviso in the Barri Gòtic.

Bar del Pla

El Born · tapas & wine · 20–30 € (≈$23–34) · Mon–Sat 12:00–23:00, closed Sunday
Google Maps · website · Carrer de Montcada, 2

According to Google Maps reviews (4.4 from 6,100+): a cosy old bar with small rooms winding through the building. Catalan tapas alongside the chef's own creations, seasonal produce from the market and a good wine list. Reviewers single out the cannelloni with roast meat and the mushroom salad, but what they praise most is the service: very warm, happy to recommend dishes and to do half portions for one. It can get very crowded, so book ahead.

Bodega La Puntual

El Born · tapas & vermouth · 20–30 € (≈$23–34) · daily 12:30–0:00
Google Maps · website · Carrer de Montcada, 22

According to Google Maps reviews (4.3 from 4,300+): a modern tavern with high ceilings on Carrer de Montcada. From the street you'd never guess how big it is inside. Classic tapas, vermouth, wine and fast service, which lives up to the name. Lively and loud, especially later in the evening, and plenty of people come back a second time on the same trip.

Tapeo

El Born · creative tapas · 20–30 € (≈$23–34) · daily 12:00–0:00
Google Maps · website · Carrer de Montcada, 29

According to Google Maps reviews (4.5 from 4,900+): a small bar serving creative tapas on the same Carrer de Montcada as Bar del Pla and La Puntual. A long menu of classics and inventions: people praise the veal with bone marrow and the "Iber-burger" with jamón and truffle mayo. For some guests it was the best dinner of the whole trip. It's very busy in the evening, with a wait of about half an hour; lunchtime is easier.

El Casal Café Bar

El Born · tapas, wine & oysters · 20–30 € (≈$23–34) · daily, lunch 13:00–16:00 and dinner 19:00–0:30 (Wed and Sun until 23:30)
Google Maps · website · Plaça de Víctor Balaguer, 5

According to Google Maps reviews (4.6 from 1,800+): a relaxed local café-bar just off the tourist crush of El Born. A set menu of the day at lunchtime; in the evening, tapas, regional wines and fresh oysters. Reviewers praise the ribs, sardines, patatas bravas, pancetta, slow-cooked beef and foie gras. No pretension and friendly staff, and it works whether you're on your own, a couple or a group.

Bar Mono

Barri Gòtic · tapas & gastropub · 20–40 € (≈$23–45) · daily 8:30–0:00, Fri–Sat until 1:00
Google Maps · website · Plaça de Sant Josep Oriol, 4

According to Google Maps reviews (4.1 from 2,900+): a gastropub on one of the prettiest squares in Barri Gòtic, with a modern room full of plants and a warm atmosphere. Classic tapas for sharing, refreshing sangria and tinto de verano. Guests often come back here on the last night of their trip. It's touristy and popular, so book for the evening.

Bar Oviso

Barri Gòtic · bar & tapas · 10–20 € (≈$11–23) · daily 10:00–0:30, Fri–Sat until 1:30
Google Maps · Carrer de n'Arai, 5

According to Google Maps reviews (4.3 from 2,100+): a noisy bar with old-style murals and a terrace on a square next to a playground. A big menu of tapas, sandwiches, burgers and salads; people praise the focaccia and the patatas bravas, and there are lots of beers and good music in the evening. The downsides: service can be slow, and you have to flag the waiters down.

El Raval

Bar Muy Buenas

El Raval · Catalan food · 20–30 € (≈$23–34) · daily 13:00–0:00
Google Maps · website · Carrer del Carme, 63

According to Google Maps reviews (4.5 from 2,700+): a small old bar-restaurant with a Modernista interior from the early 1920s and lots of original details, and the staff are happy to tell you its history. Reviewers praise the bomba with braised beef, the pan con tomate, the Catalan-style chicken, the wine and the vermouth. It isn't the cheapest bar, and the atmosphere is deliberately old-fashioned, which is exactly what some people love about it.

Cassette Bar

El Raval · tapas & cocktails · 20–30 € (≈$23–34) · Tue–Thu 19:30–0:00, Fri–Sat lunch 13:30–17:00 and dinner from 19:30–20:00 until 1:00, closed Sunday and Monday
Google Maps · website · Carrer de l'Est, 11

According to Google Maps reviews (4.8 from 900+): a warm little 80s-style tavern, next door to Foni. Tapas with unexpected ingredients (kimchi, tongue, bluefin tuna, cheeses for the brave), tacos, excellent gin and tonics and a dessert of the day, such as strawberries in vermouth syrup. Friendly, knowledgeable staff. Guests write that they came in for a drink and stayed for dinner.

La Barceloneta

Bar Electricitat

La Barceloneta · bar & tapas · 10–20 € (≈$11–23) · Tue–Thu 8:30–16:00, Fri until 17:00, Sat–Sun until 18:00, closed Monday
Google Maps · Carrer de Sant Carles, 15

According to Google Maps reviews (4.4 from 1,800+): an old neighbourhood bar that holds on to the real La Barceloneta: locals, modest prices, no tourist gloss. The main draw is the house vermouth. People recommend the bomba, croquetas, tortilla, octopus and the crab salad (more of a pâté that you eat with bread). Come early, before the queue builds. It can get loud.

Bodega Fermín

La Barceloneta · vermouth bar & craft beer · 10–20 € (≈$11–23) · daily 12:00–0:00, Fri–Sat until 1:00
Google Maps · Facebook · Carrer de Sant Carles, 18

According to Google Maps reviews (4.4 from 1,700+): a tiny neighbourhood bar with a counter and a terrace, across the street from Bar Electricitat. Vermouth, wine from the barrel and craft beer. The small kitchen behind the counter turns out strong tapas: potatoes with black garlic, aubergine with goat's cheese, sardines, sobrasada with honey and pistachio, morcilla with pear jam. Good prices for the quality, and very friendly service.

One last thing

Spaniards eat dinner late: before 20:30 many bars have free tables, and by 21:30 there's a queue. The easiest way to get into popular places like Tapeo or Bar del Pla without a booking is to come at lunchtime or right when they open.

More on Barcelona: tapas in Gràcia, Sarrià and Sants.
