Day trips from Barcelona: coast, towns and food, 12 places

· · 9 min read

In an hour from Barcelona you can be on a Maresme beach, at a Buddhist monastery in the Garraf or in a museum in one of the industrial towns around the city, with a good meal on the way. These places come from my list of saved places on Google Maps: the coast, museums in Terrassa, Igualada and Sant Adrià de Besòs, and where to eat en route. The descriptions are put together from Google Maps reviews, and I'll add my own notes as I go.

Restaurant prices are Google's average spend per person, ticket prices come from reviews; valid as of 1 October 2026. Rate: 1 € ≈ $1.13.

In short

  • Book ahead: Castell de Santa Florentina and KITSUNE in Sant Cugat.
  • Free museums: the CDMT textile museum in Terrassa and the MhiC immigration museum in Sant Adrià de Besòs.
  • With kids: mNACTEC in Terrassa, a huge hands-on science and technology museum in a former mill.
  • Sunset right outside the city: Panoramic Bar in Montgat.
  • After Montserrat: the winery restaurant Bages 964 Oller del Mas.

The coast: Maresme and Garraf

The Maresme is the coast north-east of Barcelona, a string of seaside towns along the railway. The Garraf is a hilly natural park to the south-west, on the way to Sitges.

Platja dels Tres Micos

Caldes d'Estrac, Maresme · beach · open 24 hours
Google Maps · Passeig dels Anglesos, 24–29

According to Google Maps reviews (4.4 from 952): a wide beach with golden sand and clean water where there's room even in summer; it only gets crowded at weekends. In winter people come for a walk and a coffee or a beer before lunch. You can rent an inflatable boat, about 10 € (≈$11) an hour according to reviewers. The downside for dog owners: dogs aren't allowed.

Panoramic Bar

Montgat, Maresme · hilltop bar · 10–20 € (≈$11–23) · Mon–Tue 17:00–23:00, Wed–Thu until 0:00, Fri 17:00–1:00, Sat 12:30–1:00, Sun 12:30–0:00
Google Maps · website · Parc de les Bateries, Carrer Bateries

According to Google Maps reviews (4.1 from 4,300+): a container bar on a hill in Parc de les Bateries with views over the coast and Barcelona, a sunset spot with a DJ or live music. Cocktails, burgers and Catalan bites; the patatas bravas get praise. The same complaints keep coming up: average food, slow service and a long queue at the bar in the evening. At weekends, reviewers say, there's a small entry fee of a few euros that includes a drink, and the entrance is hard to find with a sat nav.

Castell de Santa Florentina

Canet de Mar, Maresme · castle · Tue–Fri 11:00–14:00, Sat 10:00–14:00 and 16:00–18:00, closed Sun–Mon
Google Maps · website · Av. Dr. Marià Serra, s/n

According to Google Maps reviews (4.5 from 2,900+): a castle with 11th-century roots in the wooded hills above Canet de Mar, remodelled by Domènech i Montaner, so Gothic, medieval and Modernisme meet in one building. It's still privately owned and very well preserved: furnished rooms, courtyards and carved details everywhere; season 6 of Game of Thrones was filmed here. The guided or audio-guided tour takes about an hour, and you can finish with a wine tasting in the cellar. Downsides: the visit can feel a bit rushed, parking is tight, and without a car it's a walk to get there; booking ahead is recommended.

Sakya Tashi Ling

Garraf · Buddhist monastery · Wed–Fri and Sun 10:00–18:00, Sat 10:00–19:00, closed Mon–Tue
Google Maps · website · Palau Novella, Parc Natural del Garraf

According to Google Maps reviews (4.2 from 2,400+): a contemporary Buddhist monastery in an old Spanish estate in the middle of Parc Natural del Garraf, with gardens, a stupa and views of the hills and the sea. Tours take about 45 minutes and cost 7 € (≈$8) according to reviewers, usually in Spanish. There's a café with home-made food, a library and a shop. The road up is narrow and partly gravel; the easiest approach is from Sitges.

Towns and museums: Terrassa, Igualada, Sant Adrià de Besòs

The industrial towns around Barcelona: Terrassa, the old textile capital, is an easy train ride away; Igualada is farther west; Sant Adrià de Besòs starts right at the city limits.

Museu de la Ciència i de la Tècnica de Catalunya

Terrassa · science and technology museum · Tue–Fri 9:00–18:00, Sat 10:00–14:30 and 15:30–19:30, Sun 10:00–14:30, closed Mon
Google Maps · website · Rambla d'Ègara, 270

According to Google Maps reviews (4.6 from 4,400+): mNACTEC fills a former textile mill by the architect Lluís Muncunill, with brick halls, iron columns and a sawtooth roof; the building alone is worth the trip. Inside it's very hands-on: a car collection, a radio studio, a model railway, replicas of the Mir station and a Soyuz, and the old looms that walk you through the whole textile process. Reviewers put the ticket at about 6 € (≈$7); allow two to three hours, and it's especially recommended with kids.

Terrassa Textile Museum & Documentation Centre

Terrassa · textile museum · Tue and Thu 10:00–14:00 and 16:00–19:00, Wed, Fri and Sun 10:00–14:00, closed Mon and Sat
Google Maps · website · Carrer de Salmerón, 25

According to Google Maps reviews (4.4 from 252): the small CDMT museum, with old machinery, fabrics from past centuries and clothing through the ages; the room of doll dresses gets a special mention. Reviewers say entry is free. Some found the exhibition too short, and one visitor complained of rudeness.

Igualada Cemetery

Igualada · cemetery and architecture · daily 10:00–18:00
Google Maps · website · Carrer del Països Baixos, 23

According to Google Maps reviews (4.5 from 31): Igualada's new cemetery by Enric Miralles, bare-concrete brutalism set in nature, with plays of light, sloping avenues of niches and stairs that seem cut into the structure. Visitors who make it here are thrilled, though some say the site is poorly looked after. The downside: one visitor was asked to leave after half an hour on the grounds that it was private property, so check access before you go.

History of Immigration in Catalonia Museum

Sant Adrià de Besòs · museum · Tue and Thu 10:00–14:00 and 16:00–19:00, Wed, Fri and Sat 10:00–14:00, closed Sun–Mon
Google Maps · website · Carr. de Mataró, 12

According to Google Maps reviews (4.4 from 380): the little-known, free MhiC museum about immigration to Catalonia, telling how whole villages from other parts of Spain left in search of a better life. The star exhibit is a real carriage of the El Sevillano train, and there's a garden. A good short visit, very close to Barcelona.

Where to eat on the way

Casa Blava

Molins de Rei · Catalan food and grilled meat · 40–60 € (≈$45–68) · Mon–Thu 13:30–16:00 and 20:00–23:00, Fri until 0:00, Sat 13:00–18:00 and 20:00–0:30, Sun 13:00–18:00
Google Maps · website · Av. Verge de Montserrat, 1

According to Google Maps reviews (4.4 from 2,300+): a restaurant with a pretty terrace surrounded by greenery and a mostly local crowd. Reviewers praise the meat selection, fresh local produce and the seasonal calçot menu, and vegetarians find plenty too; the waiters help with wine pairings. Downsides: the wine list is short and some bottles may be out, and a big group on a Sunday may be hurried out of their table.

Mecànic pizza

Sant Cugat del Vallès · pizzeria · 20–30 € (≈$23–34) · Mon–Thu 19:30–23:00, Fri–Sun 13:00–15:30 and 19:30–23:00
Google Maps · website · Carrer de Sant Esteve, 6

According to Google Maps reviews (4.5 from 1,300+): a pizzeria with a proper oven in the centre of Sant Cugat; besides the pizza, people like the focaccia and salads, the attentive service and the fair prices. The dough splits opinion: some find it soft and melting, others chewy and too puffy, with too much sauce. The benches at some tables are uncomfortable.

Bages 964 Oller del Mas

Bages, on the C-37z · winery restaurant · 30–90 € (≈$34–100) · daily 9:00–23:00
Google Maps · website · Carretera de Igualada C-37z, km 90.5

According to Google Maps reviews (4.5 from 926): the refined restaurant of the Oller del Mas winery, looking out over a golf course and the mountains, and a handy stop after Montserrat. Reviewers praise the three-course set menu paired with the estate's own wines, the quality ingredients, the polished service and how well they handle special diets. Downsides: it's expensive and fairly formal, and the wine tasting is modest according to reviewers, three small pours with a little cheese and cured meat.

KITSUNE

Sant Cugat del Vallès · Japanese · 30–40 € (≈$34–45) · daily 13:00–16:30 and 20:00–0:00
Google Maps · website · Plaça de Pep Ventura, 3

According to Google Maps reviews (4.4 from 2,200+): a stylish Japanese restaurant with sushi, sashimi and tasting menus. Reviewers recommend the hot tartare, the hitto-taru roll, the tonkatsu curry and the green tea cheesecake; the tuna is Balfegó from L'Ametlla de Mar. The room is small and always full, so book a few days ahead. The downside: it can come to more than you'd expect, around 35 € (≈$40) per person for a modest amount of sushi.

One last thing

Almost all the museums and castles on this list are closed on Mondays, and many close at 14:00. On a Monday, head for the Tres Micos beach or Panoramic Bar in the evening, and have lunch at Casa Blava: they're open.

More on Barcelona: mountains and waterfalls.
