The best of Cappadocia is out in the open: valleys of fairy chimneys, trails between the towns and viewpoints where you see hundreds of balloons at dawn. These come from my list of saved places and from travel guides (34travel first of all); the descriptions are put together from Google Maps reviews. Later I added Rose Valley, Devrent Valley and Ortahisar Castle on the advice of travel guides.

Entry tickets come from visitors' reviews; valid as of 7 October 2026. Rate: 100 ₺ ≈ $2.03.
In short
- Sunset: Cappadocia Sunset Point above Göreme for 30 ₺ (≈$0.60), or Uçhisar Kalesi.
- Sunrise with balloons: Aşk Vadisi, free to enter.
- A walk: Güvercinlik Vadisi from Göreme to Uçhisar — about 4 km, a couple of hours with stops.
- The brightest colours: Kızılçukur (Red Valley) at sunrise and sunset; it links up easily with Rose Valley and its hidden rock churches.
- Instead of Uçhisar: Ortahisar Kalesi, cheaper and calmer, about 100 ₺ (≈$2).
- A quick stop: Devrent Vadisi and its camel rock, free to enter.
Göreme: sunset
Cappadocia Sunset Point
Göreme, the hill above town · viewpoint · 30 ₺ (≈$0.60), card only
Google Maps · Aydın Kırağı Sk., 14
According to Google Maps reviews (4.6 from 450+): Göreme's most popular spot for sunset and for the dawn balloons — the town lies right below you, and its lights come on after dark. It's a 10–15 minute uphill walk from the centre, with drinks and snacks sold at the top. Very busy at sunset; walk a little further for a quieter spot. Buy the ticket at the booth at the bottom.
The valleys around Göreme

Güvercinlik Vadisi (Pigeon Valley)
between Göreme and Uçhisar · valley and walking trail · open 24 hours
Google Maps · website · Göreme – Uçhisar
According to Google Maps reviews (4.6 from 19,000+): a valley of pigeon houses carved into the cliffs, with views over the rock chimneys. An easy option is to get to Uçhisar and walk down to Göreme. Signs aren't everywhere: when in doubt, follow the stream and the yellow markers. It's muddy after rain, and with small children the walk feels long.
Pigeon Valley Trailhead East
Göreme, Aydınlı · trailhead · open 24 hours
Google Maps · Uzun Dere Cd.
According to Google Maps reviews (4.5 from 100+): the Göreme end of Pigeon Valley. It's about 4 km to Uçhisar, but you can exit to the village after 2–2.5 km — roughly two hours with photo stops. Take a photo of the map at the start: further on the trail gets confusing, with steep and slippery stretches. Dogs live halfway along — most walkers barely noticed them, but one couple describes an aggressive pack; better not to go alone at dusk.
Aşk Vadisi (Love Valley)
Göreme · valley of rock pillars · free · open 24 hours
Google Maps · Bağlıdere
According to Google Maps reviews (4.7 from 960+): a valley of tall, pale chimneys, best just after dawn, when the balloons drop low among the rocks. The car park sits above the valley and a steep path leads down; the viewpoint has swings and photo props. Entry is free. To see the pillars up close, reviewers suggest Paşabağ instead. 34travel recommends it too (article).
Red Valley, Rose Valley and Devrent

Kızılçukur (Red Valley)
Ortahisar, west of Göreme · valley for walks and sunset · free · open 24 hours
Google Maps · website · Ortahisar
According to Google Maps reviews (4.7 from 610+): the Red Valley, with pinkish-red tuff layers that glow at dawn and dusk, plus cave houses and churches — the most impressive being Kolonlu Kilise. Take a taxi to a viewpoint and walk back to Göreme, or link it up with Rose Valley; wear proper shoes. At sunset it's packed with photographers, who all leave at once. 34travel recommends it too (article).
Güllüdere Vadisi (Rose Valley)
between Göreme and Çavuşin · valley for walks · free · open 24 hours
Google Maps · Gül Vadisi
According to Google Maps reviews (4.7 from 2,000+): Rose Valley has trails among oddly shaped rocks and several rock-cut churches deep inside; some find it more rewarding than Göreme Open Air Museum. Go in the morning, when it's quiet. There are cafés along the way but no proper toilets, and the signposting is confusing: reviewers suggest following the red arrows painted on the rocks and downloading an offline map such as AllTrails.
Devrent Vadisi (Imagination Valley)
Aktepe, on the Ürgüp–Avanos road · valley of rock figures · free · daily 7:30–22:00
Google Maps · Ürgüp Yolu
According to Google Maps reviews (4.7 from 3,200+): Imagination Valley has no churches or cave houses; instead, erosion has shaped the tuff into figures people read as animals, the best known being the camel rock by the road. Entry is free and a short stop is enough, which is why group tours often include it. Downsides: crowded on Sundays, and take care crossing the narrow, busy road.
Rock fortresses: Uçhisar and Ortahisar

Uçhisar Kalesi (Uchisar Castle)
Uçhisar · rock fortress and viewpoint · ticketed · daily 7:00–21:00
Google Maps · website · Tekelli
According to Google Maps reviews (4.6 from 32,000+): a huge tuff rock riddled with rooms, cisterns and tombs, lived in until the 1960s. Around 275 steps through narrow passages lead to the top and a panorama over all of Cappadocia. Wear non-slip shoes, and bring a jacket at sunset, when it gets cold and windy fast. The fortress is lit up at night, with cafés and stalls at its foot.
Ortahisar Kalesi (Ortahisar Castle)
Ortahisar · rock fortress and viewpoint · about 100 ₺ (≈$2) · daily 9:00–18:00
Google Maps · website · Resul Bey Sk.
According to Google Maps reviews (4.6 from 7,100+): a 100-metre rock in the middle of Ortahisar, riddled with tunnels, ladders and lookouts, with a panorama of valleys, chimneys and cave houses from the top. Many suggest it instead of Uçhisar Kalesi: cheaper (a car park ticket can be swapped for entry), fewer people, and an ordinary working town around it. Come just before sunset; the climbs are steep, which is hard going if you're scared of heights.
One last thing
Plan the valleys around the sun: the dawn balloons from Sunset Point or Aşk Vadisi, a Pigeon Valley walk in the day, sunset on Uçhisar Kalesi or Ortahisar Kalesi (it closes at 18:00, which in winter is nearly sunset). Up top it gets cold and windy fast in the evening, so bring a jacket, and shoes with grip for the trails.
