What to see and buy in Rotterdam: 11 places

· · 7 min read

My saved places in Rotterdam had none of the architecture people come here for — just two vintage shops on Oude Binnenweg. So I added nine places recommended by 34travel in its Rotterdam guide and its two days in Rotterdam piece, and checked every one on Google: still open, rated 4.2 or higher. I haven't written my own notes yet, so all the descriptions are put together from Google Maps reviews.

Prices are Google's average spend per person, tickets are from reviews; valid as of 7 October 2026. Rate: 1 € ≈ $1.12.

In short

  • Architecture for free: the Erasmusbrug and the cube houses from outside, close to each other.
  • A museum that's a depot: the Depot Boijmans, an open art store with a rooftop view, about 20 € (≈$23), closed on Mondays.
  • The view from the top: the Euromast, with two ticket levels, open until 22:00; from April to October you can also climb the Laurenskerk tower.
  • More museums: FENIX on migration, with its Tornado staircase, in Katendrecht, exhibitions at the Kunsthal, and the Maritiem Museum in the old harbour — all closed on Mondays.
  • The old harbour: Historisch Delfshaven, which survived the 1940 bombing — canals, old houses and a windmill.
  • Vintage: Foreign Vintage and Rejoes, both on Oude Binnenweg.

What to see

Erasmusbrug

Kop van Zuid · cable-stayed bridge · free · always open
Google Maps · website · Erasmusbrug

According to Google Maps reviews (4.7 from 16,000+): Ben van Berkel's 1996 bridge, which locals call De Zwaan — the Swan — for its bent white pylon. Walk across it, ideally at sunset, when the Kop van Zuid skyline lights up behind you; pedestrians and cyclists have their own lanes. At night the bridge is lit, and it looks best from the water — from a water taxi, for instance. 34travel recommends it too (article).

Kijk-Kubus Museum-house

Oude Haven · house museum · paid entry · daily 11:00–17:00
Google Maps · website · Overblaak 70

According to Google Maps reviews (4.4 from 23,000+): Piet Blom's 38 cube houses from 1984, tilted on hexagonal columns — he meant them as a forest, with each cube a tree. One cube is open as a show home with models and photos, so you can see what living in one is like. Downsides: the stairs are very steep, and some think paying to go in is pointless — it's just as striking from outside, for free. 34travel recommends it too (article).

Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk

Centrum · Gothic church · Tue–Sat 10:00–17:00, closed Sun–Mon
Google Maps · website · Grotekerkplein 15

According to Google Maps reviews (4.5 from 3,400+): Rotterdam's only surviving medieval stone church, in 15th–16th-century Brabantine Gothic, with stained glass and a huge organ. From April to October there are tower climbs: it's a tough one, with a rest stop halfway, and the view from the top is widely called the best in the city. It's a living church, hosting concerts, weddings and even fashion shows. 34travel recommends it too (article).

Maritiem Museum Rotterdam

Leuvehaven · maritime museum · Tue–Sat 10:00–17:00, Sun 11:00–17:00, closed Mon
Google Maps · website · Leuvehaven 1

According to Google Maps reviews (4.3 from 7,300+): the museum of Europe's biggest port — ship models, harbour history and an interactive zone where under-12s can lose hours; outside in the Leuvehaven, old vessels and port cranes stand against the skyscrapers. Downsides: many adults find the exhibition modest and confusing — you can see it in an hour, and a ticket is about 19 € (≈$21); the ships are closed in winter, until April. 34travel recommends it too (article).

Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen

Museumpark · open art depot · about 20 € (≈$23) · Tue–Sun 11:00–17:00, closed Mon
Google Maps · website · Museumpark 24

According to Google Maps reviews (4.4 from 5,900+): the world's first museum storehouse fully open to the public — a mirrored building shaped like a flowerpot. The works are kept by climate zone rather than by period; some storage rooms are visited in groups of 13, and through glass partitions you can watch paintings being restored. On top there's a viewing platform over the city. Downside: anyone expecting a classic old-masters museum can come away disappointed — it is, after all, a store. 34travel recommends it too (article).

Kunsthal Rotterdam

Museumpark · exhibition hall · Tue–Sun 10:00–17:00, closed Mon
Google Maps · website · Westzeedijk 341

According to Google Maps reviews (4.4 from 8,400+): a brutalist steel-and-glass building with ramps between floors, showing only temporary exhibitions — art, fashion, design, photography. There's no permanent collection, so check what's on before you go. Book a slot online and come on a Saturday morning. Downside: the café is slow. 34travel recommends it too (article).

Euromast

Het Park · observation tower · two ticket levels · daily 9:30–22:00
Google Maps · website · Parkhaven 20

According to Google Maps reviews (4.4 from 21,000+): a tower with all-round views over the city and the port, and on a clear day all the way to the coast. There are two ticket levels: the pricier one includes a rotating lift to the very top, though its glass floor didn't impress many. There's a restaurant up there that some call the best they've ever eaten at. Buy tickets online in advance, or you may wait a long time in the café; in August there are queues even for the lift. 34travel recommends it too (article).

Historisch Delfshaven

Delfshaven · historic district · free
Google Maps · Voorhaven 16

According to Google Maps reviews (4.6 from 850+): one of the few corners of Rotterdam that survived the 1940 bombing — a harbour Delft dug for itself in 1389. Canals, old Dutch houses, a windmill, galleries, cafés and bars: the opposite of the glass city centre. It's quieter and calmer than the centre, a few stops away by metro. 34travel recommends it too (article).

FENIX

Katendrecht · migration museum · Tue–Sun 10:00–17:00, closed Mon
Google Maps · website · Paul Nijghkade 5

According to Google Maps reviews (4.7 from 2,300+): a new museum of migration in an old harbour warehouse — suitcases and trunks carrying people's stories, The Family of Migrants photo exhibition and contemporary art. The showpiece is the Tornado, a double spiral staircase that takes you up to a rooftop view over the port. On weekday mornings it's nearly empty, and many people spend three hours here. Downside: some expected more about migration itself and less about where the artists came from. 34travel recommends it too (article).

Vintage on Oude Binnenweg

Foreign Vintage

Oude Binnenweg · vintage clothing · Mon–Thu & Sun 12:00–18:00, Fri 12:00–20:00, Sat 11:00–18:00
Google Maps · website · Oude Binnenweg 95a

According to Google Maps reviews (4.9 from 180+): carefully picked vintage and modern pieces at fair prices — the racks feel like a small gallery. The owner is dressed to match the interior, helps you find the right size and plays good music.

Rejoes

Oude Binnenweg · thrift shop · Mon 11:00–19:00, Tue–Thu & Sat 10:00–19:00, Fri 10:00–20:00, Sun 12:00–18:00
Google Maps · website · Oude Binnenweg 34

According to Google Maps reviews (4.3 from 100+): a big thrift shop with decent brands and no mark-up — football shirts and scarves right by the door, and new stock every week. Downside: one review complains of unfriendly staff.

One last thing

Don't plan museums for a Monday: the Depot Boijmans, the Kunsthal, FENIX, the Maritiem Museum and the Laurenskerk are all closed that day. Give Monday to the free architecture instead — the Erasmusbrug, the cube houses and Delfshaven — and buy your Euromast ticket online in advance.
