What to see in Moscow: 11 places, from Red Square to GES-2

· · 7 min read

In Moscow, old factories have long since turned into galleries and design quarters. Eight places from my list of saved spots: four art spaces in former industrial buildings and four museums, from the New Tretyakov Gallery to the Museum of Moscow. Postcard Moscow wasn't on my list, so I added Red Square, Zaryadye Park and VDNKh, which every guidebook recommends; each is checked on Google: still open, rated 4.2 or higher. The descriptions are put together from Google Maps reviews for now, and I'll add my own notes as I visit.

Prices are Google's average spend per person, valid as of 7 October 2026. Rate: $1 ≈ 85 ₽. Where Google gives no price, there's none.

In short

  • The classics in a day: Red Square, Zaryadye Park with its floating bridge over the Moskva river and, if you still have the legs, VDNKh; Zaryadye and VDNKh are open round the clock.
  • Free contemporary art: Winzavod and ARTPLAY, five minutes apart near Kurskaya.
  • The big 20th-century museum: the New Tretyakov Gallery on Krymsky Val. One day isn't enough.
  • A former bakery: Hlebozavod №9 near Savyolovskaya, with young Russian brands, small cafés and bars.
  • A former power station: GES-2 on Bolotny Island, with exhibitions, performances and a concert hall, daily 11:00–22:00.

The big sights

Red Square

Kremlin · square
Google Maps · website · Krasnaya Ploshchad

According to Google Maps reviews (4.8 from 167,000+): the country's main square — St Basil's Cathedral, the Kremlin walls, Lenin's mausoleum and GUM. You can easily spend a day around it: the Alexander Garden, Zaryadye Park, GUM and the rooftop viewpoint of the Central Children's Store. In winter there's a fair and a skating rink. It's busy at any hour, and at dawn, one reviewer says, guards only let people onto the square from 6:00.

Zaryadye Park

Kitay-gorod · park · open 24 hours
Google Maps · website · Ulitsa Varvarka, 6 bldg 1

According to Google Maps reviews (4.5 from 77,000+): a park next to Red Square on the site of the demolished Hotel Rossiya. Paths lead through natural zones — tundra, steppe, forest and floodplain — but the highlight is the floating bridge over the Moskva river with a view of the Kremlin, a good sunset spot. There's an underground concert hall, cafés and free toilets, and water misters on hot days. In winter the bridge is bitterly cold.

VDNKh

Ostankino · exhibition park · open 24 hours
Google Maps · website · Prospekt Mira, 119

According to Google Maps reviews (4.7 from 130,000+): a vast exhibition park opened in 1939, with pavilions for the Soviet republics and for industries — space, nuclear power, transport — holding museums and shops, a fountain with sixteen golden figures and, in winter, a big skating rink. Even a full day isn't enough. The grounds never close, but the museums open around 10:30–11:00, so spend the morning on the architecture.

Art spaces and old factories

Winzavod

Kurskaya · contemporary art centre · daily 9:00–22:00
Google Maps · website · 4-y Syromyatnicheskiy Pereulok, 1/8 bldg 6

According to Google Maps reviews (4.5 from 5,000+): a former winery that now houses galleries in vaulted halls and contemporary art shows, many of them free. It isn't huge, so you can see everything without getting worn out. There are cafés, souvenir shops and shops of local furniture and clothing designers. Reviewers suggest setting aside half a day.

Design Center ARTPLAY

Kurskaya · design centre · daily 10:00–21:00
Google Maps · website · Nizhnyaya Syromyatnicheskaya Ulitsa, 10

According to Google Maps reviews (4.6 from 8,400+): an old factory turned into a quarter of architecture studios, galleries, design shops and cafés. Reviewers say to walk into every building, since each has its own story. Multimedia exhibitions come and go; a Klimt show and one about space got good words. Almost everything is in Russian only.

Hlebozavod №9

Savyolovskaya · creative quarter · grounds open 24 hours
Google Maps · website · Novodmitrovskaya Ulitsa, 1

According to Google Maps reviews (4.7 from 5,700+): a former bread factory now full of independent shops, young Russian brands, small cafés and bars. The crowd is mostly local and young. It's easy to spend an afternoon here, shopping by day and meeting friends in the evening. Check individual shops and cafés for their own hours.

GES-2

Bolotny Island · house of culture · daily 11:00–22:00
Google Maps · website · Bolotnaya Naberezhnaya, 15

According to Google Maps reviews (4.2 from 630+): a house of culture in a former power station, with striking architecture, a carefully designed interior, exhibitions, performances and a concert hall with a view. The courtyard has good shade in summer. Some call it one of the best contemporary art centres in the world; others see it more as a pleasant space for locals. Strelka is a five-minute walk away.

Museums

Krymsky Val · 20th-century art museum · Tue, Wed, Sun 10:00–18:00, Thu–Sat until 21:00, closed Mon
Google Maps · website · Krymsky Val, 10

According to Google Maps reviews (4.7 from 11,700+): the main collection of 20th-century Russian and Soviet art, in a modernist riverside building, Black Square included. The permanent collection is on the top floor and temporary shows are below; you can't see it all in a day, so reviewers suggest one floor per visit. A ticket to the permanent collection is cheap. There are places to sit and have a coffee out front.

Moscow Museum of Modern Art

Petrovka · modern art museum · Tue–Sun 12:00–21:00, closed Mon
Google Maps · website · Petrovka Ulitsa, 25

According to Google Maps reviews (4.5 from 3,000+): Russian and international art of the 20th and 21st centuries in a Neoclassical mansion. The galleries feel calm, the captions are clear and light on theory, and the courtyard has plenty of sculptures and a Georgian restaurant. It's more of an hour than half a day. Sceptics note that in rooms like these anything looks like art.

Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center

Maryina Roshcha · history museum · Sun–Thu 12:00–22:00, Sat 18:00–22:30, closed Fri
Google Maps · website · Ulitsa Obraztsova, 11

According to Google Maps reviews (4.7 from 4,500+): a museum of the history of Jews in Russia, and of Russian history through their eyes. Very modern, with lots of interactive exhibits and video. Moving without being melodramatic; some visitors spend more than eight hours here. Security checks are thorough and repeated, the museum is hard to find, and the souvenirs are expensive.

Museum of Moscow

Park Kultury · city museum · Tue–Sun 11:00–21:00, closed Mon
Google Maps · website · Zubovskiy Bul'var, 2

According to Google Maps reviews (4.4 from 3,400+): the city history museum, across from Park Kultury metro station. The exhibition runs in order from ancient times to the 1930s; reviewers like the recreated apartment showing how Muscovites lived in the 20th century. There's also a flea market with Soviet souvenirs. The start can feel monotonous, but the depth of the material makes up for it.

One last thing

The museums on this list close on Mondays, and the Jewish Museum on Fridays, so give Monday to Winzavod, ARTPLAY and Hlebozavod, which are open every day — or to Red Square, Zaryadye and VDNKh, which have no closing day.

More on Moscow: where to eat, bars and food halls.
