Where to eat in Huế: 10 places for local food

· · 7 min read

Huế has a cuisine of its own: the old imperial capital is known for spicy bún bò soup and tiny steamed rice cakes. My list of saved places had almost no food — the only one of mine here is Le Cercle Hue, with a short note. I added nine eateries and restaurants that city guides recommend (mostly Vietnam Coracle); their descriptions are compiled from Google Maps reviews.

Prices are Google's average spend per person; prices of single dishes and tickets come from reviews. Valid as of 7 October 2026. Rate: $1 ≈ 26,000 ₫.

In short

  • What to eat: bánh khoái and the "royal" rice cakes at Quán Hạnh and Lạc Thiện, bún bò Huế at Bún Bò Bà Nga (evenings only), clam rice at Cơm hến Hoa Đông — 20,000 ₫ (≈$0.80) a bowl.
  • Also try: bánh canh cá lóc fish noodle soup at Dì Hương (evenings only, about 30,000 ₫ (≈$1.20)) and clay-pot rice at Cơm niêu Chạn, where most diners are Vietnamese.
  • A nice sit-down: Le Cercle Hue on the river promenade, and Nhà Hàng Vỹ Dạ Xưa with a riverside garden and royal tea.
  • Cheap: Lạc Thiện, Bà Nga and Hoa Đông average under 100,000 ₫ (≈$4) a head, Quán Hạnh under 200,000 ₫ (≈$8).
  • Timing: Bún Bò Bà Nga only opens at 17:00, while Cơm hến Hoa Đông and Vỹ Dạ Xưa are open from early morning.

Where to eat: Huế food

Le Cercle Hue

Thuận Hóa · riverside restaurant · daily 6:00–23:00
Google Maps · website · 11 Lê Lợi

A French colonial sports club turned into a restaurant. Great riverside promenade.

According to Google Maps reviews (4.7 from 990+): an elegant restaurant with a terrace right over the Sông Hương, best at sunset. Reviewers praise the wagyu or Angus beef phở, the deconstructed bánh mì, the mango sticky rice and service above the city's usual standard. The menu runs from Vietnamese to Italian and grill; skip the pizza.

Quán Hạnh

Thuận Hóa · Huế dishes · 100,000–200,000 ₫ (≈$4–8) · daily 10:00–21:00
Google Maps · Facebook · 11–15 Phó Đức Chính

According to Google Maps reviews (4.3 from 4,100+): where guides and local friends send you to try everything at once — crispy bánh khoái pancakes and the rice cakes bánh bèo, bánh nậm, bánh lọc and bánh ram ít, best as a set. Waiters show you how each one is eaten. Fast, cheap, and the passion fruit juice is a hit. Packed in the evening with lots of foreigners; the odd reviewer finds the food bland.

Lạc Thiện Restaurant

Phú Xuân · family eatery · up to 100,000 ₫ (≈$4) · daily 9:00–21:00
Google Maps · 6 Đinh Tiên Hoàng

According to Google Maps reviews (4.4 from 1,100+): a simple family eatery right by the Citadel where the signature bánh khoái is fried in front of you. The bún bò Huế gets praise too, as do the home-cooking prices and the owner, who speaks several languages; they top up your salad and peanut sauce without asking. Street-side atmosphere, sodas in glass bottles.

Bún Bò Bà Nga

Phú Xuân · bún bò Huế · up to 100,000 ₫ (≈$4) · daily 17:00–23:00
Google Maps · 62 Nguyễn Chí Diểu

According to Google Maps reviews (4.3 from 770+): an evening locals' spot for the city's signature soup — a spicy lemongrass beef broth. The special bowl with pork knuckle and crab balls is about 50,000 ₫ (≈$2) and comes with a whole basket of herbs. Hardly any tourists. Come at opening: later there's a queue, and in the rush orders get forgotten.

Cơm hến Hoa Đông

Vỹ Dạ · clam rice · up to 100,000 ₫ (≈$4) · daily 7:00–21:30
Google Maps · Facebook · 64 Kiệt 7 Ưng Bình

According to Google Maps reviews (4.4 from 2,500+): an alley by the river and red plastic stools — the place for cơm hến, rice with tiny river clams, pork crackling and peanuts, and mì hến noodles. A bowl is about 20,000 ₫ (≈$0.80) and small, so order two. The aunties speak no English but will show you what to add. Downside: it's a street stall, with street-stall hygiene. Vietnam Coracle recommends it too (guide).

Nhà Hàng Vỹ Dạ Xưa

Vỹ Dạ · restaurant and tea house on the river · up to 500,000 ₫ (≈$19) · daily 6:15–22:30
Google Maps · Facebook · 131 Nguyễn Sinh Cung

According to Google Maps reviews (4.8 from 2,200+): a calm restaurant in the old Vỹ Dạ quarter with a garden right on the river. People come for breakfast, salt coffee, the royal tea set with sweets — about 149,000 ₫ (≈$6) for two — and dinners of Huế dishes. Big portions, lovely presentation. A little pricier than usual, and there are mosquitoes by the water. Vietnam Coracle recommends it too (guide).

More Huế food: crêpes, fish noodle soup and clay-pot rice

Bánh Khoái Hồng Mai

Phú Xuân · bánh khoái and nem lụi · under 100,000 ₫ (≈$4) · daily 10:30–20:30
Google Maps · website · Đinh Tiên Hoàng, 110

According to Google Maps reviews (4.4 from 910+): an eatery with essentially two Huế dishes on the menu, the crispy bánh khoái crêpe with a generous filling and nem lụi, pork grilled on lemongrass sticks, both with peanut sauce. The owners are welcoming, speak some English and show you how to eat it all; they can make a vegetarian version too. Clean, with fans and cold beer, and walking distance from the Citadel. Vietnam Coracle recommends it too (guide).

Bánh Canh Cá Lóc Dì Hương

Phú Xuân · bánh canh fish noodle soup · under 100,000 ₫ (≈$4) · daily 16:00–22:00
Google Maps · Lê Thánh Tôn, 14

According to Google Maps reviews (4.3 from 150+): a street stall with one dish, bánh canh cá lóc, a soup of thick noodles and snakehead fish that's hard to find outside Huế. The only choice is the noodle: tapioca or rice flour. A bowl is about 30,000 ₫ (≈$1.20). The kitchen is right on the street, with low tables and stools, and the customers are mostly locals; there's no menu and no English, but there's little to get wrong. Evenings only. Vietnam Coracle recommends it too (guide).

Cơm niêu Chạn

Thuận Hóa · home-style food, clay-pot rice · 100,000–200,000 ₫ (≈$4–8) · daily 10:00–22:00
Google Maps · Facebook · Nguyễn Thái Học, 1

According to Google Maps reviews (4.6 from 3,100+): a restaurant of Vietnamese home cooking where rice comes in a hot clay pot with a golden crust at the bottom. Reviewers praise the braised fish, chicken, aubergine, local greens and house-made condiments; fruit or dessert arrives on the house at the end. The diners are mostly Vietnamese, but there's an English menu and English-speaking staff. Inexpensive for the quality.

Madam Thu 2 - Hue Restaurant

Thuận Hóa · Huế dishes · 100,000–200,000 ₫ (≈$4–8) · daily 10:00–22:30
Google Maps · website · Võ Thị Sáu, 4

According to Google Maps reviews (4.7 from 2,900+): a family restaurant by Phố đi bộ with a wide choice of Huế dishes; the fried spring rolls, lemongrass chicken and bún bò get the praise, along with the salt coffee and coconut coffee. The staff explain which sauce goes with what, which some find a bit much. It's packed at lunch; for a terrace table, come at 17:00. The downside: the crowd is almost entirely tourists.

One last thing

Get to Bà Nga for bún bò at the 17:00 opening, before the queue, and order two bowls at Cơm hến Hoa Đông straight away — they're small.
